Today, my father and I decided to take action after noticing a large amount of litter carelessly scattered on the ground right outside a government girls' high school, even though massive trash bins were available right next to it. To raise awareness about civic sense and climate change, we cleaned up the area ourselves, collecting all the loose garbage from the ground and throwing it properly inside the bins. It is disheartening to see people dump waste on the streets instead of using the designated bins, especially outside an educational institution meant for young girls. Civic Action Beyond the Doorstep: Transforming Community Gatherings into Environmental Drives

 

Every week, regular community gatherings bring people together from all walks of life. While these moments are traditionally centered around reflection, unity, and shared values, they also present an incredible, underutilized opportunity for grassroots environmental action. Cleanliness and care for our surroundings are core tenets of our social fabric, yet our public spaces often tell a very different story.

​Today, following the Friday prayers, a group of friends decided to translate these values into immediate physical action. Rather than dispersing home, the team mobilized to conduct a localized cleanup drive at a nearby public park that had been suffering from severe littering and accumulated single-use plastic waste.

​The Problem in Our Parks

​Public parks serve as the green lungs of our urban neighborhoods. They offer a natural escape, reduce localized ambient temperatures, and provide space for children to play. However, due to public apathy and the widespread usage of disposable packaging, these spaces are frequently treated as dumping grounds.

​Discarded wrappers, plastic bottles, and polythene bags do more than just ruin the aesthetic beauty of a park; they degrade the soil, suffocate root systems, and block water retention. Relying solely on municipal workers is not enough to combat this continuous influx of waste. It requires active, hands-on civic participation.

Leading by Example

​The execution of today's drive was straightforward but highly effective. By spreading across the park's fields and walking tracks, the group systematically collected layers of plastic waste that had accumulated over the week. In less than an hour, the physical state of the park was completely transformed.

​What makes this initiative significant is its scalability. It demonstrates that meaningful environmental conservation doesn't always require large-scale funding or institutional planning. A handful of determined individuals utilizing their afternoon can completely reclaim a public space, setting a visual benchmark for everyone else utilizing the park.

​A Weekly Habit for a Sustainable Punjab

​If every neighborhood group dedicated just thirty minutes after weekly gatherings to clean their local green spaces, the cumulative impact on Punjab’s environment would be monumental. It would drastically cut down the volume of plastic heading into blocked drainage networks, improve local soil health, and cultivate a culture of zero tolerance toward littering.

​Environmental protection is a collective responsibility. By taking ownership of our parks, fields, and streets, we lay the groundwork for a cleaner, healthier, and truly green province. The transition begins when we decide that our civic duty extends far beyond our own doorsteps.

Combating Smog through E-Mobility: Inside the CM Punjab Green Credit Program

 

​Every winter, cities across Punjab face severe air quality degradation, commonly recognized as smog. While several factors contribute to this environmental challenge, localized vehicular emissions from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles remain a dominant source of street-level air pollution.

​To create a structural shift in how urban centers manage transit emissions, the Environmental Protection and Climate Change Department (EPCCD), Government of Punjab, has introduced a targeted economic incentive: The Chief Minister Punjab Green Credit Program.

​Aligning Ecology with Economy

​Environmental policies are most effective when they align ecological benefits with tangible financial incentives for the public. The Green Credit Program functions on this exact principle. Rather than relying solely on regulatory restrictions, the program actively rewards citizens who transition to zero-emission electric bikes (e-bikes).

​According to the official launch guidelines (outlined in the campaign flyer 1000281372.jpg), individuals who adopt electric mobility can earn up to PKR 100,000 in Green Credits. This financial offset lowers the entry barrier for purchasing electric vehicles, making green technology accessible to everyday commuters, students, and professionals

Embarking on the CM Climate Leadership Program internship has been one of the most defining experiences of my academic and professional journey. Supported by the EPA, this unique initiative is not just an educational opportunity; it is a vital call to action for young individuals passionate about environmental stewardship in Punjab. The program is carefully structured to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding of climate change and the practical, localized leadership required to implement effective solutions in our communities.

​Throughout this internship, we are diving deep into the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, exploring its impacts on agriculture, water resources, and public health within Punjab. We are learning how environmental policy is crafted and, crucially, how it must be supported by robust grassroots advocacy. This program empowers us to think strategically about sustainability, equipping us with the tools to analyze complex environmental data and design inclusive climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

​A primary focal point of our efforts, and one that resonates deeply with me, is the urgent campaign for a Plastic-Free Punjab. The proliferation of single-use plastics is a visible crisis affecting our ecosystems and our health. Through the CM Climate Leadership Program, we are actively working on the ground to promote sustainable alternatives, conducting awareness campaigns, and engaging with local businesses and policymakers to foster a circular economy. We understand that achieving a plastic-free future requires systemic change alongside a massive shift in individual consumption habits, and we are committed to leading that charge.

As temperatures rise across Lahore, we need to focus on a serious environmental challenge: the urban heat island effect. Heavy concrete infrastructure traps heat, making our urban spaces significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas.

Mitigating this "fifth season" requires switching to rigorous electric vehicle incentives, enforcing zero-emission tech in factories, and building cross-border environmental agreements to address regional crop fires.

Yet, a silent modern threat looms over these ancient structures: the relentless tide of single-use plastic pollution. Protecting our heritage is no longer just the job of historians and archaeologists; it has fundamentally become an environmental emergency.

​Historical sites draw massive crowds of domestic and international tourists daily. With tourism comes a massive influx of single-use plastic water bottles, disposable cutlery, and food packaging. When public spaces lack modern, specialized disposal infrastructure, these plastics quickly accumulate in manicured gardens, centuries-old water channels, and historic brick alleyways. Because plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, it physically compromises the integrity of historic masonry, clogs traditional drainage pathways designed centuries ago, and severely degrades the visual aesthetics of our cultural landmarks.

​Allowing plastic waste to dominate our historical sites also sends an alarming message about our values as a society. It suggests a disconnect between admiring our past and preserving our future. A historic site littered with plastic is a clear sign of civic neglect, signaling that we fail to respect the spaces that define our collective identity. Environmental action at heritage sites bridges the gap between historical pride and active, modern citizenship.

​By intentionally arranging dedicated plastic recycling bins at these historic locations, we create a vital point of intervention. These bins do more than just hold plastic; they serve as modern monuments to civic awareness. They remind visitors that loving Lahore's history means keeping its soil clean. Preserving our past requires us to adapt our present habits. Beyond the Single Bin: Why Source Segregation is Lahore’s Next Climate Frontier

For decades, waste management in Lahore has followed a linear, uniform pattern: see trash, throw it in the nearest container, and expect it to disappear. However, as our city grows exponentially and the global climate crisis intensifies, this "one-size-fits-all" approach to public trash is proving to be a logistical and environmental failure. The solution lies not just in providing more bins, but in fundamentally shifting toward source-level waste segregation.

​When plastic bottles, wrappers, and packaging are tossed into the same container as wet organic food waste, an environmental crisis begins. Contaminated by food and liquids, highly recyclable plastics lose their industrial value, making them significantly harder—and often impossible—to process. Consequently, millions of tons of reusable polymers are routed directly to Lahore’s landfills, such as the sprawling Lakhodair site, or worse, burned openly in empty plots, releasing toxic dioxins and contributing directly to the severe smog crises that paralyze the city every winter.

​Moreover, unsegregated plastic waste is a major driver of localized climate vulnerability. During heavy monsoon seasons, loose plastics are swept into Lahore's urban sewage systems. The resulting blockages cause severe urban flooding, stagnant water pools, and a subsequently heightened risk of waterborne diseases. By failing to separate our waste at the moment of disposal, we actively degrade our own public health and climate resilience.

​Introducing dedicated, clearly designated recycling bins next to traditional trash containers in public spaces provides a powerful behavioral intervention. When people are presented with an explicit choice—a clean, separate bin for plastics—it triggers a psychological "nudge." It forces citizens to pause, categorize their consumption, and realize that plastic does not belong in the ground. Source segregation reduces the burden on recycling plants, minimizes landfill volumes, and lowers the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing virgin plastics. It is time for Lahoris to move past the single-bin mentality; separating our waste is a crucial step toward building a sustainable, breathable city.

Trees play an essential role in maintaining environmental balance. They naturally cool surrounding areas, reduce pollution, improve air quality, and provide protection against heat stress. However, rapid urban expansion continues replacing natural spaces with concrete roads, commercial infrastructure, and housing developments.

This transformation affects both the environment and public health.

Urban areas with fewer trees absorb and trap more heat during daytime hours. Roads, buildings, and concrete surfaces store heat and release it slowly, causing cities to remain warm even during nighttime. This phenomenon is increasingly visible across many parts of Punjab.

Rising temperatures, worsening air quality, unpredictable weather conditions, water stress, and shrinking green spaces are no longer distant environmental concerns. They are realities affecting communities across urban and rural areas alike.


One major reason behind increasing environmental stress is the imbalance created between development and sustainability.


Rapid urban expansion continues replacing natural landscapes with roads, buildings, and concrete infrastructure. While development is necessary for population growth and economic activity, environmental protection is often treated as secondary. Climate experts continue linking these worsening heat conditions with climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable urban development.
One major contributor to rising urban temperatures is the reduction of green spaces. Trees naturally help regulate temperatures, improve air quality, and cool surrounding environments through shade and moisture release. However, rapid urbanization continues replacing vegetation with roads, buildings, and concrete infrastructure that trap heat throughout the day.
This creates what environmental researchers describe as urban heat accumulation, where cities remain significantly hotter than nearby areas due to excessive concrete surfaces and reduced greenery.

Energy Policy: Balancing Today’s Needs with Tomorrow’s Possibilities

 In an increasingly interconnected world facing severe climate realities, the conversation around energy is no longer just about production—it is about survival, equity, and strategic governance. I recently had the privilege of presenting my research work during a virtual seminar titled "Energy Policy: A Pathway to Sustainable and Inclusive Growth".

​The core takeaway from my research and our subsequent collective dialogue was simple yet profound: “Good energy policy balances today's needs with tomorrow's possibilities.” To achieve this balance, modern policy architectures must move away from isolated solutions and instead adopt a holistic framework built on six critical pillars.

Sudden Weather Changes Are Becoming a Climate Warning

 Across Pakistan, unusual weather patterns are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Sudden temperature shifts, unexpected rainfall, intense heatwaves, dust storms, dry winds, and unstable seasonal conditions are affecting daily life more frequently than before. Many people now notice that weather no longer follows predictable seasonal patterns the way it once did.

Environmental experts link these irregular changes closely with climate change and environmental imbalance.

As global temperatures rise, weather systems become more unstable. Heat trapped within the atmosphere affects rainfall patterns, seasonal timing, air circulation, and extreme weather intensity. While climate change is a global issue, its effects are becoming highly visible at the local level throughout Pakistan.

Urbanization also contributes to environmental instability.

Rapid expansion of concrete infrastructure, shrinking green spaces, deforestation, pollution, and environmental degradation reduce nature’s ability to regulate temperatures and maintain ecological balance. Cities become hotter, rainfall runoff increases, and environmental stress intensifies during seasonal transitions.

These sudden weather shifts are not only inconvenient. They also affect agriculture, public health, water availability, infrastructure stability, and economic activity. Farmers struggle with unpredictable rainfall timing, cities face drainage pressure during unexpected storms, and vulnerable communities experience increasing exposure to heat and environmental stress.

Rising Summer Heat and Climate Awareness in Pakistan

 Across Pakistan, summer conditions are becoming increasingly difficult each year. Longer heatwaves, unusually high daytime temperatures, dry weather patterns, and rising urban heat are now affecting millions of people across cities and rural communities alike. What was once considered occasional extreme weather is gradually becoming part of everyday environmental reality.

Climate experts around the world continue warning that rising global temperatures are intensifying environmental stress, especially in vulnerable countries already facing water shortages, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation. Pakistan remains among the countries highly exposed to these climate-related challenges.

One major reason behind worsening summer conditions is the decline of natural environmental balance.

Urban expansion continues replacing trees and green spaces with roads, buildings, and concrete infrastructure that trap heat throughout the day. This increases surrounding temperatures and creates hotter urban environments, especially within densely populated cities.

Air pollution further worsens the situation.

Vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, waste burning, and environmental mismanagement contribute to declining air quality while intensifying atmospheric heat retention. Combined with reduced greenery, these conditions make cities increasingly vulnerable to severe summer stress.

The consequences extend beyond discomfort.

Extreme heat affects public health, increases electricity demand, places pressure on water resources, and creates challenges for outdoor workers, students, and vulnerable populations. Agriculture also becomes increasingly affected as high temperatures damage crops and increase water requirements.

Importantly, climate awareness is not only about understanding global environmental issues. It is also about recognizing how local environmental behavior contributes to larger climate problems.

Tree plantation, cleaner urban planning, reduced pollution, responsible waste management, and sustainable environmental practices can collectively improve climate resilience over time.
