Climate Change and Urban Flooding — A Ground Reality Experience

Recent heavy rains have once again highlighted how vulnerable our urban infrastructure is to climate change. What is often seen as “normal rainfall” quickly turns into street flooding and waterlogging due to blocked drainage systems and poor waste management.

Today, I took part in a hands-on effort to open blocked manholes and clear sewage pathways so that accumulated rainwater could properly drain from streets and residential roads. The situation on the ground was clear: plastic waste, debris, and unattended drainage systems were the main reasons water was unable to flow freely.

This experience reinforced an important truth—climate change is not only about rising temperatures or global discussions. It directly affects everyday life in local communities. When extreme rainfall occurs, the lack of proper drainage transforms roads into flooded zones, making transportation difficult and increasing health risks due to stagnant water.

By physically clearing blockages, I witnessed how even small interventions can immediately improve water flow and reduce flooding. However, such efforts should not only depend on individuals. Municipal systems, public awareness, and responsible waste disposal are essential for long-term solutions.

Climate resilience begins at the community level. If drainage systems are maintained and waste is managed responsibly, the impact of heavy rainfall can be significantly reduced. My experience today was a reminder that climate action is not always global—it often starts right outside our homes.

Waste Pollution Is Becoming a Serious Environmental Threat in Punjab

 Waste pollution is no longer only a municipal cleanliness issue. Across many urban areas of Punjab, unmanaged garbage accumulation has become a growing environmental and public health concern directly connected to sustainability, climate resilience, and urban living conditions.

Open dumping sites, roadside garbage piles, plastic waste accumulation, and burning trash are increasingly visible in cities and neighborhoods. These practices not only damage the appearance of public spaces but also create serious long-term environmental consequences that affect communities every day.

One of the most immediate problems caused by unmanaged waste is pollution of the surrounding environment. Plastic materials, food waste, and mixed garbage often remain exposed in open areas for long periods, especially during high summer temperatures. This accelerates decomposition, produces foul odors, attracts insects and disease-carrying organisms, and increases risks to public hygiene.

Open waste burning further worsens environmental conditions.

In many areas, garbage is burned to reduce accumulation, but this releases toxic smoke and harmful particulate matter into the atmosphere. Burning plastic materials is especially dangerous because it produces pollutants that can affect respiratory health and contribute to worsening air quality. In densely populated urban environments, these emissions become particularly harmful for children, elderly individuals, and people already affected by respiratory conditions.

Waste accumulation also affects drainage systems.

Plastic bags and unmanaged garbage frequently block drains and sewage channels, reducing water flow and increasing the risk of urban flooding and water contamination. During monsoon periods, these blocked systems can create additional sanitation and environmental problems for entire communities.

Importantly, waste pollution is also linked to climate and sustainability challenges. Excessive consumption, poor recycling systems, and weak waste segregation practices increase environmental pressure on already stressed urban systems. Environmental awareness therefore cannot focus only on global climate discussions while ignoring local pollution problems visible within daily life.

Punjab’s environmental future depends partly on whether waste management becomes a shared social responsibility rather than only a government obligation.

 Bakra Eid is one of the most important religious occasions celebrated across Pakistan. It is a time of sacrifice, charity, gratitude, and community participation. However, alongside its spiritual importance, Eid also brings environmental responsibilities that communities often overlook.

During Eid days, cities experience a significant increase in organic waste, plastic materials, disposable packaging, and animal remains. Without proper management, this sudden rise in waste can create serious environmental and public health problems, especially during extreme summer temperatures common across Punjab.

One of the biggest issues is improper waste disposal in streets, empty plots, roadside areas, and drainage systems. Organic waste decomposes rapidly under high temperatures, producing unpleasant odors and increasing bacterial growth. This can affect hygiene conditions and create health risks for nearby communities.

Drainage systems are also heavily affected during Eid. Waste materials dumped into drains can block water flow, worsen urban sanitation conditions, and contribute to water contamination problems. Why Tree Plantation Matters More Than Ever in Punjab

 Tree plantation has become one of the most discussed environmental activities in recent years, but its importance extends far beyond symbolic awareness campaigns or seasonal plantation drives. In Punjab, where rising temperatures, worsening air pollution, urban heat, and environmental degradation are becoming increasingly visible, trees now represent one of the most important natural defenses against climate stress.

Climate change is already affecting daily life across Pakistan. Summers are becoming hotter, heatwaves are lasting longer, and urban areas are experiencing stronger environmental pressure due to pollution and rapid expansion. While global greenhouse gas emissions are a major cause behind rising temperatures, local environmental decisions also play a critical role in determining how severely cities and communities experience climate impacts.

One of the biggest environmental challenges in Punjab is the continuous reduction of green cover.

This becomes particularly important in Punjab, where smog and pollution continue affecting millions of people every year. Environmental sustainability therefore cannot be separated from tree preservation and plantation efforts.

Beyond urban cooling and air quality, trees contribute toward biodiversity protection, soil stability, and groundwater support. Their roots help reduce soil erosion while vegetation improves rainwater absorption into the ground. In a province facing both heat stress and growing water concerns, these ecological functions are becoming increasingly important.

 Extreme heat is no longer an occasional environmental event in Punjab. Over the last several years, heatwaves have become more frequent, longer-lasting, and increasingly intense across many parts of the province. Cities such as Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Faisalabad regularly experience temperatures that push beyond normal seasonal limits, creating serious environmental and public health concerns.

While many people describe this simply as “hot weather,” environmental researchers warn that the situation is closely connected to climate change and unsustainable urban development.

One major factor behind worsening heatwaves is the gradual increase in average global temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change disrupts natural weather systems, intensifies extreme weather events, and increases the likelihood of prolonged periods of dangerous heat. Pakistan, despite contributing relatively little to global emissions compared to industrialized nations, remains highly vulnerable to climate-related impacts because of its geographic and environmental conditions.

However, Punjab’s heat problem is also strongly connected to local environmental changes.

Rapid urbanization has transformed many cities into concrete-heavy environments where roads, plazas, housing societies, and commercial infrastructure absorb and trap heat throughout the day. This creates what scientists call the “urban heat island effect,” where urban areas become significantly hotter than nearby rural regions. Public awareness is also essential because environmental sustainability depends partly on everyday behavior. Conserving water, protecting trees, reducing unnecessary waste, and supporting environmentally responsible policies all contribute toward building climate resilience.

Punjab’s Water Crisis Is No Longer a Future Threat

 Punjab has historically been known as the “land of five rivers,” a region associated with agriculture, fertile land, and abundant water resources. Yet despite this identity, concerns regarding water scarcity are increasing rapidly across the province. The crisis may not always appear dramatic or immediate, but it is developing quietly beneath the surface through groundwater depletion, rising temperatures, urban expansion, and unsustainable water consumption.

One of the most alarming aspects of Punjab’s water crisis is that much of it remains invisible. Unlike floods or droughts that can be observed directly, groundwater depletion happens underground over many years. Tube wells continue extracting water faster than natural systems can replenish it, causing water tables to decline gradually across multiple regions.

Climate change is intensifying this pressure further.

Punjab is experiencing longer summers, higher average temperatures, and increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns. Higher temperatures increase evaporation rates, reduce soil moisture, and place additional stress on agricultural systems that already depend heavily on irrigation. When rainfall becomes irregular, groundwater extraction increases even more because farmers and urban populations rely on underground reserves as a backup source.

Urbanization has also contributed significantly to the problem. As cities expand through roads, housing societies, plazas, and commercial infrastructure, natural soil surfaces are increasingly covered with concrete and asphalt. Environmental crises are rarely created by one single action; they emerge through millions of unsustainable habits repeated continuously over time.

The consequences of worsening water scarcity extend far beyond environmental concerns alone. Agriculture, which supports a major portion of Punjab’s economy and food production, depends directly on stable water availability. Declining groundwater levels therefore threaten not only environmental sustainability but also food security, economic stability, and long-term public welfare.

Poorer communities often become the most vulnerable because they possess fewer resources to adapt to shortages, rising costs, or climate-related disruptions.

Despite these concerns, solutions still exist if environmental awareness translates into practical action.

Rainwater harvesting systems, sustainable irrigation techniques, groundwater conservation policies, urban green spaces, and responsible water management strategies can significantly reduce pressure on natural reserves. Public awareness is equally important because environmental sustainability depends not only on government policies but also on individual behavior and community responsibility.

Climate awareness should therefore not focus exclusively on global carbon emissions while ignoring local environmental realities. In Punjab, water scarcity is becoming one of the clearest examples of how climate change, urbanization, and unsustainable development are beginning to intersect.

The real danger is not only that water levels are falling. The danger is that many people may not recognize the seriousness of the crisis until the consequences become far more difficult to reverse.

Lahore’s Rising Heat Crisis: How Urban Expansion Is Changing the City’s Climate

 For many residents of Lahore, extreme heat is no longer an occasional weather event. Summers are becoming longer, hotter, and increasingly difficult to tolerate. Streets remain warm late into the night, electricity demand rises sharply during heatwaves, and outdoor activity during daytime hours has become physically exhausting for many people.

While global climate change plays a major role in rising temperatures worldwide, Lahore’s worsening heat problem is also connected to local urban development patterns.

Over the past two decades, Lahore has expanded rapidly through housing societies, commercial construction, road infrastructure, and large-scale concretization. Green areas that once absorbed heat and improved air quality have gradually been replaced by asphalt roads, plazas, parking spaces, and dense urban infrastructure. This transformation has significantly altered how the city interacts with temperature.

Environmental researchers describe this phenomenon as the “urban heat island effect.” In simple terms, cities become hotter than surrounding rural areas because materials such as concrete and asphalt absorb solar radiation during the day and slowly release it back into the environment at night. Unlike vegetation or soil, these surfaces trap heat rather than regulating it naturally.

This is one reason why urban areas in Lahore often remain uncomfortably hot even after sunset.

The decline of mature tree cover has made the situation more serious. Trees function as natural cooling systems within cities. In a province like Punjab, where summer temperatures can exceed 45°C, trees become essential environmental infrastructure rather than decorative elements.

Trees are often removed for road widening or commercial projects while replacement plantation efforts focus more on numbers than long-term survival. A newly planted sapling cannot immediately replace the cooling capacity of a decades-old mature tree.

The consequences of rising urban heat are not only environmental. They also affect public health, economic productivity, and energy systems. Higher temperatures increase electricity consumption due to greater dependence on cooling appliances. Poorer communities often suffer the most because many households lack reliable cooling infrastructure or access to green spaces.

Urban heat also interacts with Lahore’s pollution problem. Hotter temperatures worsen air quality conditions and intensify environmental stress across the city. Heat, pollution, water scarcity, and climate instability are increasingly connected issues rather than separate environmental challenges.

Despite these concerns, Lahore’s future is not irreversible.

Many environmental experts argue that cities can significantly reduce urban heat through climate-conscious planning. Protecting mature trees, expanding urban green belts, improving public transportation, encouraging rooftop vegetation, preserving parks, and reducing unnecessary concretization can all contribute toward cooler and healthier urban environments.

Climate awareness therefore should not only focus on distant global discussions. It should also address how local cities are being shaped today.

The environmental decisions made in Lahore during this decade will influence whether future generations inherit a livable city or one increasingly overwhelmed by heat and ecological stress.

Can Lahore Still Be Saved From Extreme Urban Heat?

 Every summer in Lahore now feels slightly more difficult than the previous one. Roads remain hot long after sunset, electricity demand surges during heatwaves, and even short walks outdoors during peak afternoon hours can become exhausting. What was once considered “normal summer heat” is gradually turning into an urban environmental crisis.

The common explanation is climate change, and climate change is certainly intensifying temperatures globally. However, Lahore’s worsening heat is also deeply connected to how the city itself is developing.

Over the past two decades, Lahore has expanded rapidly through housing societies, commercial zones, flyovers, underpasses, and concrete infrastructure. While this expansion reflects economic growth and urbanization, it has also transformed the city’s environmental structure. Large portions of open land and vegetation have been replaced with asphalt, cement, and dense construction materials that absorb and retain heat throughout the day.

This process creates what environmental researchers describe as the “urban heat island effect,” where cities become significantly warmer than nearby rural areas because built surfaces trap thermal energy. In practical terms, Lahore has started generating and storing its own heat.

One of the most concerning aspects of this transformation is the decline of mature tree cover. Trees perform an essential environmental function within cities by reducing temperatures through shade and evapotranspiration. Areas with strong tree canopies often feel noticeably cooler than heavily built commercial zones. Yet across Lahore, trees continue disappearing due to road expansion, infrastructure projects, commercial construction, and poorly regulated urban growth.

The environmental consequences are becoming increasingly visible. Heatwaves now last longer, electricity consumption rises sharply during summer months, and poorer communities face greater exposure because many households lack reliable cooling systems. Heat is no longer only an environmental inconvenience; it is becoming a public health issue.

At the same time, Lahore’s heat problem is closely connected to its air pollution crisis. Climate stress in Lahore therefore cannot be separated into isolated categories such as “heat,” “smog,” or “urbanization.” These problems reinforce each other.

The important question is whether Lahore can still reverse this trajectory.

The answer is yes — but only if environmental planning becomes central to urban policy rather than secondary to development projects.

Saving Lahore from extreme urban heat requires long-term structural changes. Protecting existing mature trees is more important than symbolic plantation numbers because fully grown trees provide immediate environmental cooling. Urban planning must also prioritize green belts, public parks, climate-sensitive construction, rooftop vegetation, and reduced unnecessary concretization.

Equally important is transportation reform. Lahore’s dependence on traffic-heavy infrastructure increases both emissions and heat generation. Sustainable public transport systems and reduced vehicular congestion would improve both air quality and urban temperatures simultaneously.

Water management also matters. As temperatures rise, groundwater depletion and reduced green cover make cities even more vulnerable to heat retention. Environmental sustainability therefore requires viewing heat, pollution, water stress, and urban planning as interconnected issues rather than separate administrative concerns.

Lahore’s environmental future will likely depend on decisions made during this decade. If development continues without ecological balance, the city risks becoming increasingly difficult to inhabit during extreme summers. But if climate-conscious urban planning becomes a genuine priority, Lahore can still move toward becoming a more livable and resilient city.

The challenge is no longer whether climate change is real. The challenge is whether cities like Lahore are willing to adapt before environmental stress becomes irreversible.

What makes groundwater depletion especially alarming is that it remains largely invisible until the consequences become severe. Rivers can visibly shrink and reservoirs can visibly dry, but underground aquifers decline silently over years. Once groundwater levels fall beyond sustainable limits, recovery becomes extremely difficult and expensive.

This issue is not only environmental; it is directly connected to food security, economic stability, and public health. Punjab’s agricultural system supports millions of livelihoods and contributes significantly to Pakistan’s economy. Water instability therefore affects far more than farming alone.

 Every winter, thick smog begins covering Lahore and several other cities across Punjab. Schools close temporarily, visibility declines, respiratory illnesses increase, and conversations about pollution dominate headlines for a few weeks. Yet once the smog season weakens, public attention usually fades as well.

The problem, however, is much deeper than seasonal air pollution.

Punjab’s smog crisis reflects a broader environmental imbalance created through unchecked urbanization, industrial emissions, traffic congestion, crop-burning practices, and declining green cover. These issues are often discussed separately, but in reality they are interconnected parts of the same environmental crisis.

One important factor that receives less attention is the gradual disappearance of urban vegetation. Trees and green spaces act as natural filters within cities. They absorb pollutants, reduce dust levels, regulate temperatures, and improve overall air quality. As cities become increasingly dominated by roads, commercial construction, and dense infrastructure, this natural balancing system weakens.

The result is visible not only during winter smog seasons but throughout the year. Summers become hotter, air quality worsens, and cities lose their ability to regulate environmental stress naturally.

What makes this especially concerning is that pollution and heat reinforce each other. Rising urban temperatures increase electricity demand because people rely more heavily on cooling systems. Higher electricity consumption often means greater fossil fuel use, which further increases emissions. More emissions contribute to worsening air quality and climate stress, creating a cycle that becomes increasingly difficult to control.

This is why climate awareness cannot remain limited to abstract discussions about global warming. In Punjab, climate change is already interacting with local environmental problems in ways people experience physically every day — through breathing difficulties, extreme heat, rising electricity costs, and declining urban comfort.

Environmental sustainability therefore requires more than symbolic plantation campaigns or temporary policy reactions during smog emergencies. Long-term improvement depends on structural changes such as sustainable public transport, stricter industrial regulation, preservation of mature trees, climate-sensitive urban planning, and stronger environmental governance.

Punjab’s environmental challenges are no longer isolated problems. Heat, pollution, water stress, and climate instability are increasingly connected. Addressing one issue while ignoring the others will not produce lasting solutions.

Lahore Is Getting Hotter — And It Is Not Only Because of Climate Change

 For many people living in Lahore, the change is already noticeable without needing scientific data to confirm it. Summers feel longer, nights remain warmer, and walking outdoors during peak afternoon hours has become increasingly exhausting. Heatwaves that once felt occasional are now becoming part of normal seasonal life.

Climate change is certainly one reason behind this rise in temperature, but it is not the only one. The way Punjab’s cities are expanding is also intensifying the problem.

Over the last two decades, Lahore has experienced rapid urban growth. Housing societies, commercial plazas, underpasses, wide asphalt roads, and concrete infrastructure have replaced open land and natural green areas at an unprecedented pace. While urban development is often associated with modernization and economic growth, it also changes how cities interact with heat.

Concrete and asphalt absorb solar radiation throughout the day and slowly release it back into the atmosphere even after sunset. This is why many urban neighborhoods remain uncomfortably warm during the night while surrounding rural areas cool down much faster. Environmental scientists describe this phenomenon as the “urban heat island effect,” where cities effectively begin trapping their own heat.

The disappearance of mature trees makes the situation worse. Trees are not simply decorative elements in a city. They function as natural cooling systems. Through shade and evapotranspiration, they reduce surrounding temperatures, improve air quality, and create more livable urban environments. In a province like Punjab, where temperatures can exceed 45°C during severe heatwaves, this ecological function becomes critically important.

Yet development priorities often ignore this relationship. Trees are regularly removed for road expansion or commercial construction, while replacement plantation campaigns frequently focus on quantity rather than survival. A newly planted sapling cannot immediately replace the environmental value of a mature tree that has spent decades stabilizing an urban ecosystem.

Climate change discussions in Pakistan often focus on floods, glaciers, or international emissions targets, but urban heat deserves equal attention because it directly affects daily life. Rising temperatures increase electricity consumption, worsen air pollution, strain public health systems, and disproportionately affect low-income communities that lack access to cooling infrastructure.

In many ways, the future livability of Punjab’s cities will depend on whether urban planning begins treating environmental sustainability as essential infrastructure rather than an afterthought. Climate resilience is not only about responding to disasters after they occur; it is also about designing cities that remain habitable in a warming future.

 Climate change communication is no longer limited to conferences, policy documents, or scientific reports. Increasingly, governments and institutions are turning toward digital platforms to engage citizens directly—and Punjab’s Im4Climate campaign is an example of this evolving approach.

The Im4Climate initiative, launched under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP) by the Environment Protection & Climate Change Department (EP&CCD), focuses on citizen-centric behavioral change through digital awareness and social media engagement.

What Is Im4Climate?

Im4Climate is designed to encourage individuals, students, content creators, and digital media entities to create environmental awareness content related to:

Climate change

Air pollution and smog

Plastic reduction

Environmental protection

Sustainable lifestyles

CM Punjab Green Credit Program initiatives

The campaign primarily operates through digital platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Snapchat, and X (Twitter).

Rather than relying only on traditional awareness campaigns, the initiative attempts to use social media as a tool for public participation and behavioral influence.

Why Digital Climate Communication Matters

Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to climate-related challenges including rising temperatures, air pollution, floods, and environmental degradation. At the same time, social media penetration in Pakistan continues to grow rapidly.

According to the campaign’s published material, Pakistan now has millions of active users across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn, making digital outreach increasingly important for public awareness efforts.

The campaign recognizes an important reality: people engage more actively with visual storytelling, short videos, music, reels, and interactive content than with formal policy discussions alone.

Climate Awareness Through Creative Media

One of the most interesting aspects of the Im4Climate campaign is its emphasis on creativity and original storytelling. The campaign encourages participants to produce videos, infographics, reels, and awareness-based content that can positively influence environmental behavior.

This reflects a broader shift in climate communication globally, where awareness increasingly depends on emotional connection, accessibility, and digital engagement.

Inspired by this approach, I explored ways of integrating climate messaging through creative formats—including visual concepts, awareness posters, and a climate-awareness music piece titled “Dharti Saah Awaaz” (The Voice of the Earth). The purpose was not only to discuss climate change academically, but also to communicate environmental urgency in a more human and accessible form.

The Role of Youth and Digital Participation

The campaign particularly focuses on youth engagement and digital participation. It also includes workshops, storytelling support, and incentives aimed at encouraging environmentally conscious digital advocacy.

This is significant because climate awareness cannot rely solely on institutions; it also requires participation from students, creators, researchers, and ordinary citizens.

Can Nature Help Solve Plastic Waste? A Conceptual Exploration Using Fungal Systems

Plastic waste has become one of the most persistent environmental challenges of our time. Its durability—once considered an advantage—now poses a serious threat to ecosystems, as conventional plastics take hundreds of years to degrade.

In an attempt to explore alternative approaches, I developed a small conceptual model that demonstrates how biological systems, particularly fungi, might contribute to addressing plastic waste.

Understanding the Process

The model is structured around a step-by-step framework:

1. Plastic Waste Segregation

The process begins with separating plastic from other types of waste. Effective segregation is essential for any downstream treatment or recycling effort.

2. Pre-treatment

Before biological intervention, plastics often require pre-treatment to alter their physical or chemical structure, making them more susceptible to degradation.

3. Fungal Inoculum

Certain fungi have shown potential in breaking down complex polymers. Introducing a fungal inoculum creates conditions where biological degradation can begin.

4. Myco-Bed Application

The final stage involves a myco-bed environment, where fungal activity interacts with treated plastic. While this does not represent a complete solution, it illustrates a possible pathway for reducing plastic persistence.

Why This Matters

Nature-based solutions are increasingly being explored as complementary approaches to conventional waste management systems. While large-scale implementation requires extensive research, models like this help visualize how such processes might work in practice.

This project is not a definitive solution but rather a conceptual demonstration aimed at raising awareness and encouraging further exploration into sustainable alternatives.

A Creative Extension

To complement this idea, I also created a climate awareness piece titled “Dharti Saah Awaaz” (The Voice of the Earth)—an attempt to communicate environmental urgency through music and creative expression.
