Punjab’s Heatwaves Are Becoming More Dangerous Every Year

 Extreme heat is no longer an occasional environmental event in Punjab. Over the last several years, heatwaves have become more frequent, longer-lasting, and increasingly intense across many parts of the province. Cities such as Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Faisalabad regularly experience temperatures that push beyond normal seasonal limits, creating serious environmental and public health concerns.

While many people describe this simply as “hot weather,” environmental researchers warn that the situation is closely connected to climate change and unsustainable urban development.

One major factor behind worsening heatwaves is the gradual increase in average global temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change disrupts natural weather systems, intensifies extreme weather events, and increases the likelihood of prolonged periods of dangerous heat. Pakistan, despite contributing relatively little to global emissions compared to industrialized nations, remains highly vulnerable to climate-related impacts because of its geographic and environmental conditions.

However, Punjab’s heat problem is also strongly connected to local environmental changes.

Rapid urbanization has transformed many cities into concrete-heavy environments where roads, plazas, housing societies, and commercial infrastructure absorb and trap heat throughout the day. This creates what scientists call the “urban heat island effect,” where urban areas become significantly hotter than nearby rural regions. In cities like Lahore, temperatures often remain high even after sunset because asphalt and concrete slowly release stored heat back into the atmosphere.

At the same time, declining tree cover has reduced the environment’s natural cooling capacity. Trees play a crucial role in regulating urban temperatures by providing shade and releasing moisture into the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. Yet many mature trees continue disappearing due to road expansion, construction projects, and weak environmental protection measures.

The consequences of extreme heat extend beyond discomfort alone.

Heatwaves place serious pressure on public health systems, especially for elderly individuals, outdoor laborers, and low-income communities without reliable cooling access. Rising temperatures also increase electricity demand as households rely more heavily on fans and air conditioning systems, which can further strain energy infrastructure.

Water demand also rises sharply during heatwaves, worsening groundwater stress in areas already facing water scarcity challenges.

Importantly, climate awareness should not only focus on reacting to extreme temperatures after they occur. Prevention and adaptation are equally necessary. Sustainable urban planning, increased green spaces, tree preservation, rooftop gardening, improved public transport systems, and climate-conscious development policies can all help reduce environmental heat stress over time.

Public awareness is also essential because environmental sustainability depends partly on everyday behavior. Conserving water, protecting trees, reducing unnecessary waste, and supporting environmentally responsible policies all contribute toward building climate resilience.

Punjab’s heatwaves are no longer isolated weather events. They are becoming evidence of a broader environmental transformation that will increasingly shape daily life in the years ahead.

The challenge now is whether society responds early enough to reduce future damage — or waits until extreme heat becomes even harder to manage.
