As temperatures rise across Lahore, we need to focus on a serious environmental challenge: the urban heat island effect. Heavy concrete infrastructure traps heat, making our urban spaces significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas.
Through my current internship with the EPA and the CM Climate Leadership Program, I am focusing on practical, data-driven solutions like urban forestry. Planting native trees isn't just an aesthetic choice; a mature green canopy can lower surface temperatures by 11°C to 25°C and actively absorb the pollutants that contribute to our annual winter smog.
Treating urban greening as essential infrastructure is one of the most effective ways to protect our public health and build climate resilience. I would love to hear from my network—what are the best ways to scale native tree-planting initiatives in our local communities?
