Why Pakistani Cities Need More Trees Than Ever

Rising temperatures across Pakistan are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Summers are becoming longer, hotter, and more dangerous for vulnerable communities. One major reason behind worsening urban heat is the continuous loss of green spaces within cities.

Trees play an essential role in maintaining environmental balance. They naturally cool surrounding areas, reduce pollution, improve air quality, and provide protection against heat stress. However, rapid urban expansion continues replacing natural spaces with concrete roads, commercial infrastructure, and housing developments.

This transformation affects both the environment and public health.

Urban areas with fewer trees absorb and trap more heat during daytime hours. Roads, buildings, and concrete surfaces store heat and release it slowly, causing cities to remain warm even during nighttime. This phenomenon is increasingly visible across many parts of Punjab.

The effects become especially severe for outdoor workers, low-income communities, elderly individuals, and children who remain highly exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Climate awareness therefore requires more than discussion alone. Sustainable environmental planning, tree plantation campaigns, and protection of existing green spaces must become long-term priorities.

Environmental protection is no longer only about preserving nature. It is becoming directly connected with human survival, public health, and the future livability of cities.
