Rising Extreme Heat and Climate Awareness in Pakistan

Across Pakistan, summer temperatures are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Prolonged heatwaves, dry winds, unusually hot days, and rising urban temperatures are now affecting millions of people throughout cities and rural communities alike. What was once considered occasional extreme weather is gradually becoming a recurring environmental reality.
Climate experts continue linking these worsening heat conditions with climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable urban development.
One major contributor to rising urban temperatures is the reduction of green spaces. Trees naturally help regulate temperatures, improve air quality, and cool surrounding environments through shade and moisture release. However, rapid urbanization continues replacing vegetation with roads, buildings, and concrete infrastructure that trap heat throughout the day.
This creates what environmental researchers describe as urban heat accumulation, where cities remain significantly hotter than nearby areas due to excessive concrete surfaces and reduced greenery.
Air pollution further intensifies the problem.
Vehicle emissions, industrial activity, waste burning, and environmental mismanagement contribute to atmospheric pollution while increasing surrounding environmental stress. Combined with declining tree cover, these factors make urban environments increasingly vulnerable to severe summer conditions.
Extreme heat affects more than comfort alone.
Public health risks increase significantly during prolonged hot weather, especially for outdoor workers, elderly individuals, and vulnerable communities. Electricity demand rises sharply because of cooling needs, placing additional pressure on energy systems already under stress. Water demand also increases while agricultural systems become more vulnerable to drought and heat damage.
Importantly, climate awareness today is not only about understanding environmental science. It is about recognizing visible changes already affecting everyday life.
Tree plantation, cleaner urban planning, reduced pollution, sustainable development practices, and environmental responsibility are essential for building climate resilience in the future.
Protecting the environment is increasingly becoming part of protecting human well-being itself.
