Punjab is witnessing increasingly intense summer temperatures that are affecting public health, daily routines, and urban living conditions. Extreme heat is no longer an occasional environmental issue. It is becoming a recurring challenge linked closely with climate change, environmental degradation, and rapid urban expansion.
One major factor contributing to rising temperatures is the reduction of green spaces. Trees naturally cool urban environments, improve air quality, and reduce heat accumulation. However, many cities continue losing vegetation due to uncontrolled development and increasing concrete infrastructure.
Air pollution further worsens environmental conditions. Vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, and waste burning contribute to atmospheric pollution while increasing heat stress within cities.
The impact extends beyond discomfort alone. Outdoor workers, elderly individuals, children, and vulnerable communities face serious risks during prolonged periods of high temperatures. Water demand rises sharply while electricity systems remain under pressure due to increased cooling needs.
Climate awareness is therefore becoming essential for both environmental sustainability and public safety.
Tree plantation, cleaner cities, sustainable urban planning, reduced pollution, and responsible environmental practices can help reduce long-term climate stress and build more resilient communities across Punjab.
